(6/2022) The five Grosjean brothers hand-harvest their biodynamically-farmed Cornalin grapes from a tiny 0.5 hectare parcel. Everything here is natural - no added yeasts, no enzymes and only spontaneous fermentations. A wine of purity and terroir, this young red was raised in large neutral wood vats for a short while before bottling. Pouring a medium pale ruby that looks like Pinot Noir or Barbera, this elegant red's lilacs, high-season cherries, strawberry mousse, campfire, dried leaves, mushroom compost and subtle herb notes are complex, delicate and totally unique. The combination of bright acidity, noble tannins, modest 13% ABV and a long, silky finish, can't help but draw comparisons to Burgundy, possibly Gevrey-Chambertin or Vosne-Romanee, with a dash of Nebbiolo's bright acidity and chewy earth. This impressive red's value is remarkable with a unique identity worth getting to know. Drinkable now, lovely with roast chicken or grilled salmon - it is capable of extended aging and should be even better with a couple years in the cellar.
